National Rail Safety Week - Australia and New Zealand 22-28 August 2011

What's On

During the week, major Rail Operators and Track Owners in Australia and New Zealand conduct various safety activities within their jurisdictions.

In coordination with relevant Government Agencies, the following activities focus on educating, building awareness and creating understanding within local communities about safe behaviour at level crossings and around rail in general.

Organisation

Activities


RailCorp
  • RailCorp is undertaking a number of activities during August 2011, to support National Rail Safety Week
  • RailCorp aims to raise awareness of customer safety-related behaviour in and around RailCorp stations and trains, and will focus on the issue of trespassing at particular locations across RailCorp’s rail network

KiwiRail
  • KiwiRail will roll out a proactive media campaign supported by paid advertising in print, radio and billboards throughout August
  • The formal campaign launch is on the evening of 23 August, car collision displays, and the wrapping of two trains in special Rail Safety Awareness Week banners will also take place
  • KiwiRail staff will conduct school visits to disseminate the rail safety message to students

Rio Tinto
  • Rio Tinto will be sending out activity books and colouring in competitions to the schools in the Pilbara regions in Years 1-3 and 4-7.  Rio Tinto will then be attending each school during NRSW with a Manager or Superintendent who will give a brief rail safety message and then award the winners with their prizes

Department of Transport, Environments and Infrastructure SA

  • Launch new pedestrian safety media campaign

TasRail
  • Advertising to create greater awareness of rail safety, including level crossing safety
  • Working with Tasmania Police on stronger enforcement at ‘hot spot’ crossings
  • Launching a ‘bumper sticker’ to promote level crossing safety
  • CCTV trial at railway level crossings

Great Southern Rail
  • Will run a media campaign

Chris Cairns Foundation
  • The Chris Cairns Foundation will run an integrated campaign aimed at discouraging motorists from queuing at level crossings. Activities will include ‘wrapping’ passenger carriages with rail safety messages, posters, radio advertising and media
  • Launching a new rail safety website: www.railsafety.co.nz
  • Supporting KiwiRail with their rail safety initiatives, including the nationwide roadshow of the controlled collision video/crashed car

Queensland Rail
  • Media campaign
  • Promotion of our `What would you miss' campaign

QR National
  • QR National will be running a proactive external media campaign to support the week as well as an internal rail safety communications campaign for employees

WestNet Rail
  • WestNet Rail will run a proactive media engagement strategy with the objective to raise awareness of safety around the railway tracks, specifically in regional communities
  • Internal communications in the lead-up to and during National Rail Safety Week with a focus on further developing a culture of safety excellence
  • During National Rail Safety Week will launch an ongoing community education program, involving local government, schools and the general public

Metro
  • Metro will run a media / publicity campaign as well as an internal staff awareness initiative during NRSW 2011
  • Further staff campaigns will be conducted during the Metro safety week in October

ITSR
  • ITSR is focused on the rail industry and two major safety risks: workers on track and collisions between road vehicles and trains at level crossings.
  • ITSR will be publishing a Transport Safety Bulletin for the rail industry on level crossing accidents in Australia. The bulletin outlines the analysis of data collated from rail safety regulators, road vehicle crash data and inventory data over a 10-year period (2000-2009). A media release highlighting the key findings of the analysis will also be released.
  • A message on track worker safety from ITSR's Chief Executive to the rail industry is available on the regulator's website www.transportregulator.nsw.gov.au and an article on the same topic appears in the industry publication Track and Signal (Winter 2011 edition: July-September).

ARTC
  • ARTC will be running a publicity campaign throughout NRSW 2011.

V/Line
  • V/Line will run an on-system campaign promoting safe behaviour around level crossings
  • V/Line will also conduct media and PR activities

Siemens
  •  Siemens will run an internal and external communication campaign as well as a safety quiz for Siemens employees to complete
  • They will also run a Safety Workshop – face to face discussion about rail safety and awareness (delivered by safety officer)
  • Customer communication about level crossing technology and how it can help to ease road traffic frustration with crossings - easing the temptation to beat the train (TBC)

Department of Lands and Planning (NT)  Media campaign

Abigroup Rail

Abigroup will be running a serious of events, presentations and activities throughout National Rail Safety Week 2011 based around challenging the team to an incident free week.

This will involve a talk from the MTM about the importance of safety in a rail environment. There will also be a presentation on how to be “fit for work” focusing on personal injury prevention, signs and impact of fatigue, drug and alcohol awareness etc.
